The Marvel universe is a vast and mysterious place, full of characters known and enigmatic.
Captain Marvel is the newest addition to the world of Marvel.
At the end of Infinity War, fans were introduced to her as a vague idea – a symbol on a pager dialled in the final moments of Nick Fury’s life.
More and more information on Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers, begins to trickle out, fans have begun to wonder…
Where has she been all this time?
Marvel has yet to confirm where Captain Marvel has been, but we may soon learn.
Her solo movie will be set in the 1990s, but no plot details have been leaked.
This new fan theory speculates where she’s been since her 1990s solo movie and the events of Infinity War.
Reddit user meme_abstinent took to the forum to explain how Captain Marvel has not been involved in the current Avengers story line, despite clearly knowing Nick Fury from the 90s.
Carol Danvers became Captain Marvel when her co-officer, a Kree alien, protects her from an explosion resulting in their DNA fusing.
The movie will likely follow her comic story of the war between Earth and the Skrulls.
Presumably by the end of the Captain Marvel movie, Earth would have somehow scraped out of the war with the Skrulls.
“Now,” the theory goes on, “turns out the Skrulls have indeed infiltrated multiple levels of Earth’s infrastructure and the world’s most powerful governments.
“This prompts Captain Marvel to begin time travelling through the Quantum Realm to begin eliminating the impostors.”
This theory explains how Captain Marvel can be in the 1990s still at the end of Infinity War, in a manner of speaking, while still being reachable on the pager.
Furthermore, Kevin Feige has been coy as to why Captain Marvel has been set in the 90s.
Feige said: “The answer is, you’ll see in the storytelling of the movie.
“But it allows us to play in an area that we have never played in before.
And tapping into a 90s action genre was fun for us and being able to see an earlier part of the MCU before Nick Fury knew anything about aliens or anything about super-powered people and also tapping into the Kree-Skrull War, which in the comics was a huge part of the comic mythology, seemed like a fun thing to try and a fun way to give Carol Danvers her own standalone origin story.”
This level of obscurity is precisely what fans have learned to expect from Marvel’s heads.
And this coy-ness certainly helps to stoke anticipation for upcoming Marvel movies.
Captain Marvel’s producer Nate Moore added: “I think the way the film opens is much different than an origin movie.”
However the movie explains Captain Marvel’s absence, it will be sure to create more fodder for Avengers 4 theories.
Captain Marvel is in cinemas Friday, March 8, 2019.
