FTSE LIVE: London stocks bounce back after falling to 7-month nadir; Barclays banks higher profits; Metro hails ‘superior service’ as customer numbers grow
The blue chip index is in the green at the open, up 0.5 per cent, after an almighty 1.3 per cent crash on Tuesday, which sent the footsie to 7-month lows of 6,944.
Barclays has reported a rise in profits to £1.46billion for the last three months. Boss Jes Staley said it was a ‘year of delivery’ for the lender, in spite of macro-economic uncertainty and concerns over Brexit ‘weighing heavily on market sentiment’.
Meanwhile, its fledgling rival Metro Bank saw profits more than double to £10million following a rise in deposits and record lending growth.
