Haunting of Hill House is the story of a mansion with a dark history that has traumatised — or possibly even killed — its past residents.
It’s based on a gothic horror novel of the same name, which The Shining author Stephen King said was one of the best ghosts books of the last century.
Tweeting about the Netflix show, he said: “I don’t usually care for this kind of revisionism, but this is great.
“Close to a work of genius, really. I think Shirley Jackson would approve, but who knows for sure”.
“I started to think that someone was sat at the end of my bed in the night”
But the actors seem to have got more than they bargained for, with ghosts invading their sub-consciousness.
The spooky sensations got so bad, they admitted not being able to sleep.
Oliver Jackson-Cohen, who plays drug addict Luke in the show, said: “In prep I started to think that someone was sat at the end of my bed in the night.
“Obviously you know, because we’re actors, we’ve got stupid imaginations,” he told Metro.co.uk.
Co-star Elizabeth Reaser, who plays his sister, said: “I had no ghostly interactions but I feel like there’s something that happens to your unconscious when you’re pretending like this for nine months.
“It’s more not being able to sleep, feeling crazed.”
Oliver added: “There was a week when all of us shot for nine months and I remember calling you one day and you just hadn’t slept.
“I just can’t sleep because, like you say, when you’re drumming that stuff up for so long, you kind of get a hang-up on it.”
“It’s like your body doesn’t know that you’re pretending,” added Elizabeth.
