"⭕️UNAMA Compromised: A Mission Unable to Fulfill Its Mandate🇺🇳🇦🇫 From the perspective of an International Relations scholar, the report submitted to the on #Afghanistan raises serious questions, not only about the conduct of the Taliban authorities but also about the constrained environment in which the operates. The report notes that the Taliban have barred Afghan women employed by the UN from entering UN premises & restricted their participation in mission activities. Such measures directly compromise the operational independence & credibility of an international monitoring body. When a host authority blocks UN staff especially women from accessing facilities, it limits the mission’s ability to gather information, operate freely & maintain the neutrality expected of a multilateral institution. Analytically, this demonstrates how the Taliban have structurally constrained the mission they are supposed to be observed by. Beyond these operational limits, the report reveals a troubling picture of Taliban governance. The Taliban’s approach to governance is rigid & ideological. They reject democratic systems and constitutional frameworks, insisting that all laws come from their interpretation of religious texts. In practice, they explicitly consider only Sunni Muslims as true Muslims & view other sects as non-Muslims. This replaces citizen participation with centralised authority, where political power is justified by ideology rather than institutional consent or representative mechanisms. Women & girls bear the brunt of this model. Education beyond grade 6 is banned, employment opportunities are restricted & access to public services is limited. This is not only a human rights violation but also a massive drain on the country’s human capital. Excluding half the population undermines institutions, weakens social mobility & deepens poverty. Justice under the Taliban is increasingly arbitrary & socially biased. Public executions, floggings & harsh criminal penalties dominate the legal system. Reports indicate that only the poor, lower-middle & middle classes are truly subjected to the law, while elites & those with influence evade accountability. Criticism is criminalised, media outlets face closures & civic space is shrinking fast. Arbitrary arrests & extrajudicial killings continue despite promises of amnesty, showing that reconciliation & political inclusion are superficial. Key administrative roles go to loyalists, sidelining professional expertise. Security remains fragile. Cross-border clashes continue and extremist groups such as TTP, ISIS-K & Al-Qaeda retain significant operational capacity. Even though the Taliban control territory, the security situation remains unstable and threats continue to persist. While UNAMA has reported these vulnerabilities, independent field assessments indicate that the Taliban are operating as a unified entity alongside TTP, ISIS-K & Al-Qaeda, coordinating internally to maintain control despite ongoing security threats. Humanitarian & economic crises worsen daily. About 21.9 million people need aid, including 11.6 million children, while 17.4 million face acute food insecurity & nearly 1 million children under 5 require treatment for severe malnutrition. Funding shortfalls & restrictions on female staff make delivering essential assistance even harder. The reality in this report cannot be ignored UNAMA has been compromised. It remains without a formally appointed head for over 6 months & the Afghan Taliban regime is actively blocking senior leadership appointments. If the mission cannot operate freely or hold the Taliban accountable, what is the purpose of maintaining a presence that cannot fulfill its mandate?"
